So an advertisement actually caught my eye today - it was just a SunChips bag slowly decomposing in the soil. But it was the most exciting thing I've seen in weeks!! Why?
Their bags are now COMPOSTABLE! This means there is zero waste post-purchase. No more plastic bags from SunChips sitting in a dump for the rest of eternity.
Evidently the one negative side effect is that the bags are EXTREMELY loud, there is a funny video here that demonstrates just how loud they really are...
Obviously any logical person wouldn't mind a little extra noise for such an awesome new product.
Their website even has instructions on how to start your own backyard compost!

Way to go, SunChips!!

HEY! To play devil's advocate...
ReplyDelete- Do you think that those bags will decompost in backyard systems, which usually don't get hot enough to decompose other things like this e.g. spudware?
- Do you think that enough people who eat sunchips compost in their backyards, or have access to other forms of compost (neighborhood-, city- or county-wide collection systems)?
- If not, does it matter that they can decompose if a majority of their consumers are going to throw them away in their normal trashbin, whether or not they have access to compost or not, therefore not actually reducing the things that are thrown away?
- If the answer is no to the above, do you think that the folks at SunChips did this to make consumers feel more eco-friendly, but not actually change habits or mindsets about consumption & desposibility?
...Just a few concerns. Beware greenwashing!
<3!
People are going to eat SunChips no matter what, and if this change to their product opens some people's eyes to the idea of composting and that the majority of their food comes wrapped in plastic... maybe they'll start thinking about their choices a little more. I am aware of "green-washing", but this company didn't NEED to change a damn thing about themselves because they will continue to make a lot of money regardless.
ReplyDeleteI think there's more than 1 way to look at it.
